Birth Time Correction in Saju: When Your Chart Doesn't Feel Right
Unsure about your birth time? Learn how Korean Saju birth time correction works, why it matters, and how practitioners fix inaccurate Four Pillars charts.

Why Birth Time Correction Matters More Than You Think
Korean Saju birth time correction is one of the most critical yet overlooked steps in getting an accurate Four Pillars reading. If your Hour Pillar is wrong, your entire chart shifts. And I'm not talking about subtle differences. I mean a completely different personality profile, different Useful God (용신 Yongsin), different career path, different relationship dynamics. Everything changes.
Here's the thing. A surprising number of people don't know their exact birth time. Hospital records might round to the nearest hour. Parents remember "sometime in the early morning." Older generations in Korea sometimes didn't record times at all. If you've ever gotten a Saju reading that felt off, like the practitioner was describing someone else entirely, there's a real chance your birth time is wrong. You can start exploring what your chart looks like with a free reading, but if the results feel disconnected from who you are, birth time correction might be what you actually need.
I've had clients sit across from me with this look on their face. Confused. Slightly disappointed. "That doesn't sound like me at all." And nine times out of ten, when we dig into it, the birth time they gave me was a guess. Their mom said "around 2 AM" or the birth certificate was filled out hours after delivery.
What the Hour Pillar Actually Controls

In the Four Pillars system (사주 Saju), your chart is built from four pillars: Year, Month, Day, and Hour. Each pillar has a Heavenly Stem on top and an Earthly Branch below. That's eight characters total, which is why Saju is sometimes called 사주팔자 (four pillars, eight characters).
Your Day Master (일간 Ilgan), the Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar, represents your core identity. That doesn't change with birth time. But the Hour Pillar? It governs your inner world, your subconscious drives, your relationship with your children, and your later years of life. It also determines one quarter of the Ten Gods (십신 Sipsin) relationships in your chart.
Let me give you a concrete example. Say someone's Day Master is Yang Wood (갑목). If their Hour Pillar contains Fire, that creates an Eating God (식신 Siksin) or Hurting Officer (상관 Sanggwan) relationship. This person would be naturally creative, expressive, maybe drawn to teaching or the arts. But if their birth time is actually two hours earlier, putting Metal in the Hour Pillar instead, now we're looking at an authority structure. Direct Officer or Seven Killings energy. That's a totally different inner life. Instead of a creative soul who needs artistic freedom, you've got someone with an internal drill sergeant, someone who craves structure and discipline beneath the surface.
Two hours. That's all it takes to flip a chart.
How Birth Time Correction Actually Works
So how do practitioners fix this? It's not magic, though it does require deep experience with chart reading. Here's my process, refined over 15 years of doing this work.
Step 1: Start With What You Know
The Year, Month, and Day Pillars are almost always accurate. Birth dates are well-documented. So I begin by reading just those three pillars and building a personality profile. I look at the Five Elements balance (오행 Ohaeng), the Ten Gods relationships, and the overall chart structure without the Hour Pillar.
Step 2: Test Each Possible Hour Pillar
Korean Saju uses the traditional Chinese hour system, which divides the day into 12 two-hour blocks (called 시 Si). Each block corresponds to an Earthly Branch. So if someone says "I was born around midnight, maybe 11 PM, maybe 1 AM," I'm looking at two or three possible Hour Pillars. I generate each version of the chart and compare them.
Step 3: Cross-Reference With Life Events
This is where it gets interesting, and where experience really matters. I ask the client specific questions:
- What was your early career like? Did you hit major turning points around certain ages?
- How's your relationship with your parents?
- Do you have children? When?
- When did your biggest financial breakthrough or setback happen?
Then I check these events against the Grand Fortune (대운 Daeun) cycles for each possible chart. Grand Fortune periods shift every 10 years and represent the most powerful timing mechanism in Saju. If a client says they had a massive career breakthrough at age 32, and only one version of the chart shows their Useful God arriving via Grand Fortune at that exact age, that's a strong signal.
Step 4: Personality Validation
I also do what I call "personality probing." Not in a creepy way. I ask about their inner tendencies. Are you someone who recharges alone, or do you need people around you? Do you prefer depth or variety in your work? Are you a starter or a finisher?
A Water Hour Pillar person will talk about needing solitude to recharge, being drawn to pattern recognition, wanting depth. A Fire Hour Pillar person will light up talking about passion projects and being in the spotlight. These aren't just personality quiz answers. They're elemental signatures that either match or don't match.
Common Signs Your Birth Time Might Be Wrong
Not sure if this applies to you? Here are patterns I've noticed over the years.
Your Saju reading describes someone you don't recognize. This is the biggest red flag. If a reading says you're naturally authority-driven and disciplined but you've spent your whole life rebelling against systems, something's off.
Your Useful God prescription doesn't help. When a practitioner identifies your Useful God and recommends certain colors, directions, or career types, and none of it resonates or works, the Useful God calculation might be based on a wrong chart. Remember: the Useful God (용신) is determined by the balance of all five elements across all four pillars. Change one pillar, and the balance shifts. A weak Day Master might actually be a strong one with the correct Hour Pillar, flipping the entire Useful God recommendation.
Life timing doesn't match. Grand Fortune cycles are calculated partly based on the Month Pillar's relationship to your gender and year, so those don't change with birth time. But the Annual Fortune (연운 Yeonun) interactions with your Hour Pillar do affect predictions. If yearly readings consistently miss the mark, the Hour Pillar could be the culprit.
Your inner life feels contradictory to your chart. The Hour Pillar is your private self, your dreams, your subconscious patterns. If your chart says your inner world is all about Earth energy (centering, stability, worry) but you actually experience deep fear and constant intellectual restlessness (Water energy), there's a mismatch worth investigating. If you're curious about what your subconscious patterns might be revealing, our Korean dream dictionary can offer some additional perspective.
Birth Time Correction for People Born Near Midnight
This deserves its own section because it comes up constantly. If you were born close to midnight, you might not only have a wrong Hour Pillar. Your Day Pillar might be wrong too.
In the traditional system, the day changes at 자시 (Ja-si), which corresponds to 11:00 PM. So if you were born at 11:30 PM on March 5th, your Saju Day Pillar is actually March 6th. This is a huge deal. Your Day Master changes. Your core identity shifts. Everything downstream, Ten Gods, Useful God, compatibility, all of it recalculates.
I once had a client who was told she was a Yin Water Day Master her whole life. She came to me frustrated because nothing in her readings ever clicked. Turns out she was born at 11:15 PM. When we shifted her Day Pillar to the next day, she became a Yang Wood Day Master. Completely different person on paper. And suddenly, everything made sense. Her drive to start things, her frustration with stagnation, her need for clear goals and autonomy. Classic Wood energy. She nearly cried in the session because it was the first time a reading actually described her.
Can You Do Birth Time Correction Yourself?
Honestly? It's hard. I wouldn't recommend it for beginners. The cross-referencing required between Grand Fortune cycles, life events, elemental balance, and personality signatures takes years of practice to do well. You need to deeply understand how the Five Elements interact, including the productive cycle (상생) and controlling cycle (상극), and how those dynamics shift when you swap one pillar.
That said, if you want to start learning the fundamentals, grabbing our free Saju ebook is a solid first step. It'll give you the foundation to at least understand what's happening when a practitioner does time correction work.

What If You Truly Can't Find Your Birth Time?

Some people will never know. And that's okay. A three-pillar reading (using only Year, Month, and Day) still provides enormous insight. You lose the Hour Pillar's nuance, but your Day Master, your elemental balance across three pillars, and your Grand Fortune timing are all still valid. I'd say a three-pillar reading is about 75% as accurate as a full four-pillar chart.
It's not ideal, but it's far better than guessing a time and building your entire life strategy on a potentially wrong chart.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does birth time affect a Saju reading?
The Hour Pillar accounts for roughly 25% of your chart's information, but its impact can be much larger because it changes the overall Five Elements balance. A different Hour Pillar can shift your Useful God (용신), alter your Ten Gods profile, and change predictions about your inner life, children, and later years. Even a two-hour difference can produce a fundamentally different reading.
What if my birth certificate time is rounded?
This is extremely common. Many hospitals round to the nearest hour or even half-hour. If your birth certificate says 3:00 AM exactly, there's a reasonable chance you were actually born at 2:45 or 3:12. In most cases this won't matter because you'll still fall within the same two-hour Saju time block. But if your recorded time falls near the boundary between two blocks (for example, 2:55 AM when the block shifts at 3:00), birth time correction becomes essential.
Can birth time correction change my Day Master?
Yes, but only if you were born close to 11:00 PM. In traditional Saju timekeeping, the day changes at 자시 (11:00 PM), not at midnight. So someone born between 11:00 PM and 11:59 PM technically falls on the next calendar day in Saju, which changes the Day Pillar and therefore the Day Master entirely. This is one of the most impactful corrections a practitioner can make.
How long does a birth time correction session take?
In my experience, a thorough birth time correction takes 60 to 90 minutes. It involves generating multiple chart versions, asking detailed questions about life events and personality tendencies, and cross-referencing Grand Fortune cycles. Quick corrections based on personality alone can be misleading. The most reliable method combines personality validation with confirmed life event timing across at least two or three major milestones.
If your readings have never quite felt right, or if you've always been uncertain about your birth time, getting a proper chart analysis from an experienced practitioner can be genuinely life-changing. Not in a dramatic way. More like finally putting on glasses with the right prescription.
