What Saju Gets Wrong About Modern Relationships
Saju is powerful, but it has blind spots in modern love. A 15-year practitioner shares what Four Pillars gets wrong about relationships today.

What Saju Gets Wrong About Modern Relationships
Let me say something that might surprise you coming from a Saju practitioner: the system isn't perfect. It's ancient, it's deep, and after 15 years of doing readings, I still find it astonishing. But when clients come to me with modern relationship questions, I have to be honest about where Four Pillars of Destiny has real blind spots.
This isn't a takedown. Saju is genuinely one of the most sophisticated systems for understanding human nature I've ever encountered. If you're curious to see your own chart, you can grab a free reading and see what the Four Pillars say about your core personality and love patterns. But then come back here, because we need to talk.
Modern relationships are genuinely different. Not just "times have changed" different. The structure, the expectations, the timelines, all of it has shifted in ways that classical Saju simply wasn't designed to handle.
The Compatibility Formula Is Too Rigid
Here's the thing. Traditional Saju love compatibility is built on elemental relationships between Day Masters (일간, Ilgan), the Heavenly Stem of your Day Pillar, which represents your core self. When two charts come together, practitioners look at whether the elements support, control, or conflict with each other.
A Fire+Water pairing? Maximum chemistry, maximum risk. The system flags this as volatile. Metal+Water? Deep Well dynamic, extraordinary intimacy but potential control issues. These archetypes are genuinely useful. I've used them thousands of times and the patterns do show up.
But here's my honest problem with the rigid application: modern couples don't fit neatly into these two-person binary reads. What about polyamorous relationships? What about co-parenting arrangements between exes who are genuinely good co-parents but terrible romantic partners? What about long-distance relationships where emotional labor is distributed completely differently than a traditional household?
The classical texts were written for a world where two people got married, lived together, had children, and that was the structure. Full stop. When I try to apply those frameworks directly to a client who has been in a seven-year relationship with someone in another country, the elemental compatibility story only tells half the tale.
Grand Fortune Timing Doesn't Account for Choice Architecture
Saju's most powerful timing tool is the Grand Fortune (대운, Daeun), a 10-year period of elemental energy that overlays your chart and shapes everything from career to health to relationships. When someone's Daeun activates their relationship-related stars, I'll often say "this is your window." And statistically, it holds up.
But modern people make relationship decisions in an environment that classical Saju never anticipated: dating apps, social media comparison, an almost infinite apparent pool of options. The paradox of choice is real. I have clients whose charts show a genuinely strong relationship window, their Daeun is perfect, their Annual Fortune (연운, Yeonun) is aligned, and they're still swiping because "maybe someone better is out there."
The system predicted the energy correctly. It couldn't predict that the energy would get scattered across 47 Hinge matches.
I've also seen the opposite. Someone in what looks like a genuinely difficult elemental period who intentionally did the inner work, made conscious choices, and built something real. Saju gave the forecast. Their agency changed the outcome. That's not a failure of Saju exactly, but it's a limitation we should name honestly.
The Ten Gods Framework Assumes Traditional Gender Roles
This one is the big one. Honestly, this is one of the most underacknowledged problems in modern Saju practice.
The Ten Gods (십신, Sipsin) system uses 10 archetypal relationship structures between your Day Master element and every other element in your chart. Specific stars in this system carry traditionally gendered meanings. The Officer Star (관성, Gwanseong), which represents what controls your Day Master, was classically interpreted as "the husband" for women's charts. The Output Star (식상, Siksang) was read as "the children" energy for women, and "the woman" in a man's chart.
These interpretations made sense in a Joseon-era social structure. They do not map cleanly onto a world where gender identity is understood as a spectrum, where same-sex couples are raising families, and where many people consciously choose to be child-free.
When I do Saju love readings for queer clients or clients who identify outside the gender binary, I have to actively reframe these classical star meanings. The underlying elemental mechanics still apply. A strong Officer Star energy still points to a personality that craves structure, definition, and commitment in relationships. That's real. But telling a gay man that his Officer Star represents "his wife" is not just outdated, it's actively confusing and alienating.
Good modern practitioners adapt. But the texts themselves haven't been rewritten. That gap matters.
It Underweights Therapy, Trauma, and Psychological Growth

A client came to me a few years ago with what looked like a genuinely difficult Wood+Metal configuration between herself and her partner. Metal cuts Wood in the controlling cycle (상극). Tension pair. On paper, friction and potential criticism that erodes.
But they'd both done years of couples therapy. They'd named their patterns. They'd built real communication tools. That relationship was more functional than many "compatible" elemental pairings I've seen.
Saju reads the raw natal energy. It doesn't have a variable for "has been in therapy for four years and genuinely did the work." Psychological development, trauma healing, attachment repair, these things genuinely change how elemental energies express in a real person's life.
The system is working from the birth chart as a kind of fixed operating system. But humans can update their software. The chart stays the same. The person changes.
What Saju Actually Gets Right (And Why It Still Matters)

I want to be clear. None of this means you should throw the system out. Far from it.
The Five Elements framework (오행, Ohaeng) gives you a genuinely sophisticated language for understanding relational energy. The productive cycle (상생) and controlling cycle (상극) are real patterns that show up in real relationships, even modern ones. A Water person who consistently loses themselves in relationships, someone whose Wood Day Master keeps running dry because they pour everything into fueling their Fire partner, these dynamics are as real in 2025 as they were in 1425.
The Useful God concept (용신, Yongsin) is also underrated for relationship advice. Knowing what your chart needs most for balance helps you understand what kind of partner energy you actually need versus what you're emotionally attracted to. Those two things are often different. Very different.
If you want to go deeper on how these concepts actually work before your next reading, the free Saju ebook is a good place to start building that foundation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Saju compatibility actually work for modern couples?
Yes, with caveats. The elemental dynamics between Day Masters do reveal real relational patterns. But classical interpretations need to be adapted for modern relationship structures, including non-traditional arrangements, long-distance partnerships, and queer relationships.
Can Saju predict divorce or breakups?
Saju can identify periods of relational stress through Grand Fortune (대운) and Annual Fortune (연운) analysis. But it identifies energy patterns, not fixed outcomes. Two people with "incompatible" charts who do the relational work can absolutely build something lasting.
How does Saju handle same-sex relationships?
The classical texts don't address this directly. Modern practitioners need to reinterpret the Ten Gods stars beyond their gendered traditional meanings and focus on the underlying elemental dynamics instead. The mechanics still apply. The old labels don't.
Is there a "most compatible" element pairing in Saju?
There's no single best pairing. The productive cycle pairings (like Water feeding Wood, or Fire warming Earth) tend to feel more naturally supportive. But "comfortable" isn't always what leads to growth. Some of the most transformative relationships I've witnessed in 15 years of readings have been tension pairings where both people were willing to lean in.
Saju is a system built for human truth. Humans in 2025 are just more complicated than the classical texts anticipated. That's not a problem to dismiss. It's an invitation to keep evolving how we use these tools.
