Saddle Star in Saju: The 4 Branches That Mark a Rise in Status

The Saddle Star (반안살, banansal) is the branch that comes right after your General Star in the twelve sinsal cycle, and it marks the moment effort turns into a secure seat: recognition, a title, a place where people trust you to stay. You find it with one lookup from your year branch or day branch, and only four branches can ever carry it: Ox, Goat, Dog and Dragon.

If you do not have your four pillars in front of you yet, run them through the free saju reading first. You need the year branch, the day branch, and ideally the hour branch, because the Saddle Star often hides in the hour pillar where people never look. If you want the full system behind these stars, the Saju Book lays out all twelve in order.

I like this star because it is one of the few in the sinsal set that reads as good news on its own. Most of the twelve describe pressure, loss or exposure. The Saddle Star describes arrival. That does not mean it works the same way in every chart, and the self-check below will show you why.

What the Saddle Star Means

The Korean name 반안 (攀鞍) describes climbing onto a saddle. In the old picture, the General Star is the commander standing at the centre of the camp. The next step in the cycle is the moment that commander mounts the horse, sits high, and is carried rather than walking. The step after that is the Travel Star, when the horse actually rides out.

So the Saddle Star sits between authority and movement. It is the seat you earn once your position is accepted. Classical texts link it with promotion, passing exams, stable rank, comfortable living and being looked after by an institution. In modern terms I read it as the part of a chart that wants a recognised role: a title on a business card, tenure, a senior seat in a family, a name people repeat.

The shadow side is the same seat. A saddle is comfortable, and comfort can turn into reluctance to get off. Charts with a strong Saddle Star sometimes hold onto a position after it has stopped serving them, or measure themselves by status more than by the work.

How to Find Your Saddle Star: One Lookup Table

The twelve sinsal are counted from the three harmony frame (samhap) of a base branch. Find which frame your year branch belongs to, then read across.

Your base branchFrameSaddle Star branchAnimal
Monkey 申, Rat 子, Dragon 辰Water frame丑Ox
Tiger 寅, Horse 午, Dog 戌Fire frame未Goat
Snake 巳, Rooster 酉, Ox 丑Metal frame戌Dog
Pig 亥, Rabbit 卯, Goat 未Wood frame辰Dragon

A quick memory trick: the Saddle Star is always the branch directly before your Travel Star, and directly after your General Star. For the fire frame, the General Star is 午, the Saddle Star is 未, and the Travel Star is 申. If you have read the General Star guide or the Travel Star guide, you already know the two neighbours.

Notice that all four Saddle Star branches are earth branches, the storage animals. That is not an accident. Each one closes a season and holds what the season produced, which is why the star reads as keeping and settling rather than chasing. The four storage animals post explains that storage idea in more depth.

The 4 Step Self-Check

Step 1: Use two bases, not one

Korean practice reads sinsal from the year branch first, and many schools also read them from the day branch. The year base speaks to your public life and early environment. The day base speaks to you and your closest relationships. Run the lookup twice. If both bases land on the same Saddle branch, the theme is louder.

Step 2: Scan the other three branches

Look for the Saddle branch in the month, day and hour branches (and the year branch, when you are using the day base). Each position colours the meaning:

Where it sitsHow I read it
Year branchFamily name or early background carries standing
Month branchCareer and institutions; the clearest promotion signal
Day branchA partner or home life that gives you a secure seat
Hour branchStatus that arrives later in life, or through children and students

Step 3: Check whether the seat is stable

A saddle only helps if it stays on the horse. Check two things:

  • A clash. Ox 丑 clashes Goat 未, and Dragon 辰 clashes Dog 戌. If your Saddle branch is clashed by another branch in the chart, the seat is real but shaky: positions come, then move. The clash guide shows how strong this is by position.
  • A penalty. 丑, 未 and 戌 also form one of the penalty groups (丑戌未). Two of them together can mean a seat that comes with friction or obligations you did not ask for.

Step 4: Check the hidden stems

Every Saddle branch is an earth branch carrying three hidden stems. Which of them helps your day master tells you what kind of seat it is.

Saddle branchHidden stemsMain element
丑 Ox癸 Water, 辛 Metal, 己 EarthWet earth with metal
未 Goat丁 Fire, 乙 Wood, 己 EarthDry earth with fire
戌 Dog辛 Metal, 丁 Fire, 戊 EarthDry earth with metal
辰 Dragon乙 Wood, 癸 Water, 戊 EarthWet earth with water

If the hidden stems include your useful god, the seat genuinely feeds you. If they mostly add an element your chart already has too much of, the position may look good from outside while draining you inside.

A Worked Example

Here is a hypothetical chart, not a client: someone born on 20 July 1990 at 14:00.

PillarStemBranch
Year庚 Yang Metal午 Horse
Month癸 Yin Water未 Goat
Day丙 Yang Fire戌 Dog
Hour乙 Yin Wood未 Goat

The day pillar 丙戌 comes from the standard day count, the month 癸未 from the 庚 year (Goat month runs from Minor Heat in early July to early August), and the hour 乙未 from the 丙 day.

Step 1: the year branch 午 is in the fire frame, so the Saddle Star is 未. The day branch 戌 is also in the fire frame, so the day base gives 未 too. Both bases agree.

Step 2: 未 sits in the month and in the hour. That is two Saddle branches, one in the career position and one in the late life position. I would read a strong pull toward a recognised role at work, and a second wave of standing later, perhaps through teaching or mentoring.

Step 3: there is no 丑 to clash the 未, so the seat holds. But the day branch 戌 sits with two 未, which completes part of the 丑戌未 penalty group. Status comes, and with it duties and people who expect things.

Step 4: 未 holds 丁 Fire, 乙 Wood and 己 Earth. For a 丙 Fire day master, Wood and Fire are support, so this seat is likely to feel like home rather than a burden, as long as the chart is not already overheated in summer.

When the Saddle Star Arrives in Time

The star also turns on when a year, month or ten year cycle brings your Saddle branch. Saju years change at Ipchun, around 4 February, not on 1 January or at Lunar New Year.

Saddle branchFor these animalsRecent and coming years

The closest one matters for many readers: 2027 丁未 is a Saddle Star year for anyone born in a Tiger, Horse or Dog year, from Ipchun 2027 to Ipchun 2028. It follows 2026 丙午, which is their General Star year, and comes before 2028 戊申, their Travel Star year. So the sequence for the fire frame runs: take charge in 2026, secure the seat in 2027, move in 2028. If you are in that group and a promotion or a formal role is on the table, 2027 is the year I would expect it to settle.

Months follow the same rule. The Saddle months are roughly:

  • 丑 month: about 6 January to 3 February (Minor Cold to Ipchun)
  • 辰 month: about 5 April to 4 May (Clear and Bright to Start of Summer)
  • 未 month: about 7 July to 7 August (Minor Heat to Start of Autumn)
  • 戌 month: about 8 October to 7 November (Cold Dew to Start of Winter)

A year counts more than a month, and a ten year cycle counts more than a year. If you want to weigh them against each other, the post on annual luck versus the ten year cycle walks through it.

What to Do With a Strong Saddle Star

A few habits I suggest for charts where this star is loud:

  1. Ask for the title. The Saddle Star rewards formal recognition. Charts like this tend to do better when the role is named and written down, not left as an informal arrangement.
  2. Pick the institution carefully. The star likes stable structures: large companies, public bodies, schools, family businesses. Check that the structure itself is sound before you settle into it.
  3. Plan the next ride. Since the Travel Star always follows, set a review point. Ask once a year whether the seat still fits, so comfort does not become stuck.
  4. Watch the clash years. For an Ox Saddle, Goat years shake the seat; for a Dog Saddle, Dragon years do, and the reverse. Those are years to protect the position, not to coast.

How It Fits With the Other Stars

The Saddle Star rarely acts alone. With a General Star in the same chart, authority and a secure seat line up, which is the classic picture of a career that climbs. With a Disgrace Star, the position comes with visibility and scrutiny. With the Imprisonment Star, the seat may come through pressure or competition. For the full set and how they are counted, see the sinsal guide and the special stars self-check.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Saddle Star good or bad?

It is one of the more favourable sinsal, linked with promotion, recognition and stable living. Whether it helps you depends on clashes against it and on whether its hidden stems support your day master. A clashed Saddle Star brings positions that do not stay.

What if I have no Saddle Star in my chart?

Most charts do not have it in the natal pillars. It still arrives through years, months and ten year cycles. Check the timing table above for your frame; those are the periods when a secure role is easiest to land.

Is the Saddle Star the same as the Travel Star?

No. They sit next to each other. The Saddle Star is the branch before the Travel Star: the seat before the ride. Saddle is about settling into a position; Travel is about leaving for a new place.

Should I read it from the year branch or the day branch?

Read both. The year base shows public standing and background, the day base shows your own life and close relationships. When both point to the same branch, give the star more weight.

A lookup table tells you whether the star is there. It cannot tell you which ten year cycle will bring the promotion, or whether your Saddle Star is feeding your day master or tiring it. That depends on the whole chart.
