Korean manuals give this star two names. The common one is jaesal (재살, 災殺), the "calamity star." The older one is suogsal (수옥살, 囚獄殺), the "imprisonment star." Both sound alarming, and both are easier to understand once you see where the star sits in a chart. It is one of the twelve sinsal, and like the others it can be found with one lookup and four branches.
You need two things for this check: your year branch and your day branch. That is the animal of your birth year and the branch under your day pillar. If you do not have your chart yet, a free saju reading will work out all four pillars in under a minute. Then bring the branches back here.
There is a timely reason to look. 2026 is a Horse year, 丙午, and the Horse is the Imprisonment Star branch for everyone whose base branch is Monkey, Rat or Dragon. That year runs until Ipchun, around 4 February 2027. If your chart sits in that group, this post explains what the year has been pressing on and what changes when it ends.
What the Imprisonment Star Is
The twelve sinsal run in a fixed order around each three-branch frame: Robbery Star, Imprisonment Star, Heaven Star, Earth Star, Peach Blossom, Month Star, Disgrace Star, General Star, Saddle Star, Travel Star, Six Harms and Flower Canopy. The Imprisonment Star is second, right after the Robbery Star.
Its position explains the meaning. The Imprisonment Star always falls on the branch that clashes with the frame's General Star. The General Star is the peak of the frame's element, the branch where it is strongest. The Imprisonment Star is the branch directly opposite that peak. So the star describes a force that stands against your strongest element and tries to hold it in place.
That is where the old meanings come from: confinement, legal trouble, being controlled by someone with more power, sudden blocks and accidents. In my readings I translate it as pressure from outside that forces you to stop, sit still and deal with something. Sometimes that is a hospital stay or a contract dispute. Much more often it is a deadline, a rule or an authority you cannot argue your way around.
The Lookup Table: 4 Branches
The Imprisonment Star always lands on one of the four cardinal branches: Rat 子, Rabbit 卯, Horse 午 or Rooster 酉. Which one depends on the frame your base branch belongs to.
| Your base branch belongs to | Frame element | General Star (peak) | Imprisonment Star branch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monkey 申, Rat 子, Dragon 辰 | Water | Rat 子 | Horse 午 |
| Tiger 寅, Horse 午, Dog 戌 | Fire | Horse 午 | Rat 子 |
| Snake 巳, Rooster 酉, Ox 丑 | Metal | Rooster 酉 | Rabbit 卯 |
| Pig 亥, Rabbit 卯, Goat 未 | Wood | Rabbit 卯 | Rooster 酉 |
These frames are the samhap groups, three branches that pull toward one element. The post on samhap explains why they belong together.
Look at the last two columns. Rat and Horse clash. Rabbit and Rooster clash. Every Imprisonment Star branch is the direct clash of its frame's peak. That single fact is the most useful thing to remember about this star. It is not a random curse attached to a branch. It is a structural opposite.
The 4-Step Self-Check
Step 1: Write down your four branches
List the bottom character of each pillar: year, month, day and hour. Keep in mind that the saju year changes at Ipchun, around 4 February, not on 1 January and not at Lunar New Year. Someone born on 25 January belongs to the previous year's animal. The birth year animal guide covers that boundary.
Step 2: Find the star from your year branch
Take your year branch, find its frame in the table and note the Imprisonment Star branch. Then check whether that branch appears in your month, day or hour pillar. The traditional method starts from the year branch, and it describes outside pressure: institutions, employers, family authority and the law.
Step 3: Repeat the check from your day branch
Do the same with your day branch as the base. Many modern readers use both. The day-branch version tends to describe pressure inside close relationships: a partner's expectations, a household rule, a promise that ties you down. If the star appears from both bases, treat it as a real theme of the chart rather than a footnote.
Step 4: Note which pillar holds it
- Year pillar: family rules, early discipline, how institutions treat you.
- Month pillar: the workplace. This is where the star most often shows up as a strict boss, a regulated industry or a job with hard limits.
- Day pillar: the self and the marriage. Pressure comes through the closest relationship, and also through your own strict standards.
- Hour pillar: later life, children and long projects. The pressure arrives late and asks for patience.
If the star does not appear anywhere in your chart, you still meet it through time. The next sections cover the years and months when it arrives.
What the Star Looks Like When It Works
A natal Imprisonment Star is not a sentence. Charts with it often belong to people who handle pressure well because they have lived with it. The modern reading follows from the structure: the same star that marks confinement also fits the people who do the confining, guarding and judging. Law, policing, the military, surgery, investigation, auditing, compliance and crisis work all fit the pattern. These are jobs where you stand opposite a strong force and hold it in check.
Each branch also carries hidden stems, and they shape how the pressure feels:
| Imprisonment Star branch | Hidden stems | How the pressure tends to show |
|---|---|---|
| Rat 子 | 壬 Water, 癸 Water | Quiet worry, secrets, things handled out of sight |
| Rabbit 卯 | 甲 Wood, 乙 Wood | Plans blocked, growth stalled by rules |
| Horse 午 | 丙 Fire, 己 Earth, 丁 Fire | Heat, conflict, urgency, public pressure |
| Rooster 酉 | 庚 Metal, 辛 Metal | Cuts, contracts, judgments and strict standards |
What those hidden stems mean for you depends on your day master. If the branch carries your officer element, the pressure comes through authority and rules, and you can usually work with it. If it carries your wealth element, it often comes through money tied up in obligations. If it carries your own element, the pressure comes through competition with peers. The useful god of the chart decides whether that force ends up helping you or wearing you down.
The Shadow Side, and How Charts Handle It
The shadow version is what the old names describe. Watch for these when the star is strong in the chart or active in the year:
- Agreements that are hard to exit. Read contracts, leases and loan terms twice.
- Conflicts with authority that escalate fast because neither side can back down.
- Accidents from rushing. The Horse and Rat branches in particular carry a sudden quality.
- Feeling boxed in at work and making an abrupt exit that you later regret.
The practical response is the same in every case: slow down and work inside the structure instead of fighting it head on. A chart under this star rarely wins by force. It wins by knowing the rules better than the people enforcing them.
A Worked Example
Here is a hypothetical chart, not a real person. Say someone was born on 20 May 1992 at 12:30 in Seoul.
| Pillar | Stem | Branch |
|---|---|---|
| Year | 壬 Yang Water | 申 Monkey |
| Month | 乙 Yin Wood | 巳 Snake |
| Day | 丙 Yang Fire | 申 Monkey |
| Hour | 甲 Yang Wood | 午 Horse |
The year is 壬申 because the date falls after Ipchun 1992. The month is 乙巳 because 20 May sits between Ipha and Mangjong, the Snake month, and a 壬 year starts its months from 壬寅. The day pillar 丙申 comes from the standard sexagenary day count. A 丙 day master places the Horse hour at 甲午.
Now the check. The year branch is Monkey, which belongs to the Water frame, so the Imprisonment Star is the Horse 午. The Horse sits in the hour pillar. The day branch is also Monkey, so the day-branch check gives the same answer. The star appears from both bases, in the hour pillar.
What does that say? The Horse holds 丙 and 丁 Fire, the same element as this 丙 day master, so the pressure arrives through peers and rivals, and through the chart's own impatience. The hour pillar places it in long projects and later life. A reading of this chart would say: the big pushback comes late, from competitors or partners who want the same thing, and patience inside the rules wins it.
The 2026 丙午 year then puts a second Horse on top of the natal one. For this chart, 2026 is a year where the hour pillar's theme comes to the front: competition, heat and a project that cannot be rushed.
The Years and Months Ahead
The Imprisonment Star also arrives through time, when the year or month branch matches your star branch.
| Your frame | Star branch | Recent year | Next years |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water (Monkey, Rat, Dragon) | Horse 午 | 2014 甲午 | 2026 丙午, 2038 戊午 |
| Fire (Tiger, Horse, Dog) | Rat 子 | 2020 庚子 | 2032 壬子, 2044 甲子 |
| Metal (Snake, Rooster, Ox) | Rabbit 卯 | 2023 癸卯 | 2035 乙卯 |
| Wood (Pig, Rabbit, Goat) | Rooster 酉 | 2017 丁酉 | 2029 己酉 |
Months follow the solar terms. The Rat month runs from around 7 December to around 5 January. The Rabbit month runs from around 6 March to around 4 April. The Horse month runs from around 6 June to around 7 July. The Rooster month runs from around 8 September to around 8 October.
So, for a Fire-frame chart (Tiger, Horse or Dog), the next Imprisonment Star month starts in early December 2026. For a Water-frame chart, the star year itself is still running until early February 2027.
Remember that an annual star sits inside a ten-year cycle. A difficult star year inside a supportive decade is a bumpy stretch, not a collapse. The post on annual luck versus the ten-year cycle explains how to weigh the two.
How It Relates to the Other Stars
The Imprisonment Star works best read as one of a set. It comes right after the Robbery Star, so the two often arrive in consecutive years: the Robbery Star year takes something away, and the Imprisonment Star year asks you to sit with the result. It also clashes the General Star, so a chart with both is a chart with a built-in tug of war between ambition and restraint.
If you want the wider map, the Disgrace Star and the special stars self-check cover the rest of the set with the same lookup method. For a longer explanation of how sinsal fit into a full reading, the Saju Book goes through them chapter by chapter.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Imprisonment Star a bad sign?
It is a pressure sign. It marks where a chart meets rules, limits and outside authority. Plenty of charts with this star do very well, especially in work that involves enforcing or managing those limits. It becomes a problem when the chart has no outlet for that pressure and the timing makes it heavier.
Do I have it if it is only in my year branch?
No. The star is defined by the base branch, so you look for the star branch in the other pillars. If your year branch is Monkey and there is no Horse in your month, day or hour pillar, you do not have a natal Imprisonment Star from the year base. You will still meet it in Horse years and Horse months.
Why do both names, jaesal and suogsal, exist?
Both are in use. Suogsal, the imprisonment name, is the more literal and dramatic one. Jaesal, the calamity name, is the one most Korean readers use today, and it is the one you will see in the standard list of twelve sinsal.
Should I avoid big decisions in my Imprisonment Star year?
Not all of them. Avoid decisions that lock you into terms you have not read closely, and avoid picking fights with authority you cannot win. Decisions that add structure, such as getting certified, tightening a contract or setting up a proper legal entity, often go well in these years because the year rewards working inside the rules.
See Where the Star Falls in Your Own Chart
A lookup table finds the star. It does not tell you how it interacts with your day master, your useful god and your current ten-year cycle. That is where a full reading earns its keep. If you want the whole picture, with every star placed in context and the next ten years mapped out, order a personal saju reading and I will read the chart line by line.
