Disgrace Star in Saju: The 4 Branches That Put You on Display
Find the Disgrace Star (mangsinsal) in your saju chart with one lookup table, a 4-step self-check, a worked example and the star years ahead.

In Korean there is a phrase people say when one embarrassing thing follows another: mangsinsari ppeotchyeotda, "the disgrace star has spread." It is said with a laugh after a typo goes out to the whole office, or with a wince after a private matter becomes everyone's business. Most people who say it have never looked for the star in their own chart. The star is real, though. It is one of the twelve sinsal, and you can find it with a single lookup.
This post gives you that lookup. You will need your year branch and your day branch, the animal sign of your birth year and the branch under your day pillar. If you do not have your chart yet, a free saju reading will calculate all four pillars in under a minute. Then come back to the table below.
I will also explain what the Disgrace Star actually describes, because the name is harsher than the meaning. In my readings I treat it as a star of exposure. Whatever sits on that branch tends to become visible, whether you planned it or not.
What the Disgrace Star Is
The Korean name is mangsinsal (망신살, 亡身殺). Read literally, the characters say "losing the self." Older manuals tie it to loss of face, public scandal, quarrels that reach the authorities and money spent to cover appearances. That is the shadow version.
The star sits in a precise spot. The twelve sinsal run in a fixed order around each three-branch frame, and the Disgrace Star is seventh, the branch just before the General Star. The General Star is the peak of the frame's element. The Disgrace Star is the step before the peak, where the element is already strong, ambitious and impatient but not yet secure.
That position explains the reading. Energy that is almost at full power wants to be seen. It speaks before the plan is finished, takes the stage before the rehearsal is over, and lets private things slip into public view. When that goes well, you get visibility, charm and a talent for being noticed. When it goes badly, you get the embarrassing version the idiom describes.
The Lookup Table: 4 Branches
The Disgrace Star always falls on one of four branches: Tiger 寅, Snake 巳, Monkey 申 or Pig 亥. Which one depends on the three-branch frame your base branch belongs to.
| Your base branch belongs to | Frame element | Disgrace Star branch |
|---|---|---|
| Monkey 申, Rat 子, Dragon 辰 | Water | Pig 亥 |
| Tiger 寅, Horse 午, Dog 戌 | Fire | Snake 巳 |
| Snake 巳, Rooster 酉, Ox 丑 | Metal | Monkey 申 |
| Pig 亥, Rabbit 卯, Goat 未 | Wood | Tiger 寅 |
These frames are the samhap groups, the three-branch combinations that pull toward one element. If you want the background, the post on samhap explains why these three branches belong together.
Notice that the Disgrace Star branch is where the frame's element reaches its working strength. Pig 亥 is the first branch where Water stands on its own. Snake 巳 does the same for Fire, Monkey 申 for Metal and Tiger 寅 for Wood. That is the "almost at the peak" quality in a single branch.
The 4-Step Self-Check
Step 1: Write down your four branches
List the bottom character of each pillar: year, month, day and hour. If you only know your birth year animal, you can still do the year check, but the day check needs the full chart. Remember that the saju year starts at Ipchun, around 4 February, not on 1 January or at Lunar New Year. Someone born on 20 January belongs to the previous year's animal. The birth year animal lookup covers that boundary in detail.
Step 2: Find the star from your year branch
Take your year branch, find its frame in the table, and note the Disgrace Star branch. Then check whether that branch appears anywhere in your month, day or hour pillars. The traditional method uses the year branch, and it describes how the star shows up in your public image, family reputation and dealings with institutions.
Step 3: Repeat the check from your day branch
Do the same with your day branch as the base. Many modern readers use the day branch as well, and it tends to describe your private life: your relationships, your partner and how much of your personal world ends up on display. If the star appears from both bases, it is a strong theme in the chart.
Step 4: Note which pillar holds it
The pillar tells you where the exposure lands:
- Year pillar: family name, early reputation, how elders and institutions see you.
- Month pillar: career and the workplace. This is the most common place for the star to show up in a public role.
- Day pillar: the self and the marriage. Private life tends to become visible here.
- Hour pillar: later life, children, projects you release to the world, and things you hope to keep quiet.
What the Star Looks Like When It Works
The modern reading of the Disgrace Star is closer to "exposure" than "disgrace." A chart with this star is easy to notice. That suits work where being seen is the job: performance, sales, teaching, broadcasting, public relations, politics, online content. The same branch that once meant scandal now often means an audience.
Each of the four branches also carries hidden stems, the elements stored inside it:
| Disgrace Star branch | Hidden stems | What becomes visible |
|---|---|---|
| Tiger 寅 | 甲 Wood, 丙 Fire, 戊 Earth | Ambition and new starts, announced early |
| Snake 巳 | 丙 Fire, 庚 Metal, 戊 Earth | Charisma, opinions and appearance |
| Monkey 申 | 庚 Metal, 壬 Water, 戊 Earth | Skill, wit and quick deals |
| Pig 亥 | 壬 Water, 甲 Wood | Emotions, private plans and relationships |
How those hidden stems relate to your day master decides the flavour. If the branch carries your wealth element, exposure often comes through money. If it carries your officer element, it comes through status and rules. If it carries your output element, it comes through what you say and make.
What the Star Looks Like When It Goes Wrong
The shadow side has a pattern. It usually involves speed: saying, posting, signing or committing before the ground is ready. The star sits one step before the peak, so the classic mistake is acting as if you were already at the peak.
A few chart conditions make the shadow version more likely:
- The branch is clashed. Every Disgrace Star branch has a clash partner: Tiger 寅 with Monkey 申, Snake 巳 with Pig 亥. A clash on the star shakes loose whatever it holds. The post on chung, the clash that breaks a pillar open shows how that works.
- The branch holds an element your chart cannot use. If the hidden stems are the element your chart has too much of, exposure tends to cost you. If they carry your useful god, the same visibility tends to help.
- The star sits next to other loud stars. Peach Blossom, the Robbery Star or the Travel Star near the Disgrace Star raise the volume. The sinsal guide covers the main challenging stars.
None of these make a person scandalous. They describe a branch where privacy is thin and timing matters more than usual.
A Worked Example
Here is a hypothetical chart. Say someone was born on 18 November 1993 at 16:00. The pillars are:
| Pillar | Stem | Branch |
|---|---|---|
| Year | 癸 Yin Water | 酉 Rooster |
| Month | 癸 Yin Water | 亥 Pig |
| Day | 癸 Yin Water | 卯 Rabbit |
| Hour | 庚 Yang Metal | 申 Monkey |
The year is 癸酉 because 1993 falls after Ipchun. The month is 癸亥 because 18 November falls after Ipdong, the solar term that opens the Pig month around 7 November, and a 癸 year starts its months from 甲寅. The day pillar 癸卯 comes from the standard day count. A 癸 day starts its hours from 壬子, so the Monkey hour from 15:00 to 17:00 is 庚申.
Year base check. The year branch is Rooster 酉, which belongs to the Metal frame (Snake, Rooster, Ox). The Metal frame's Disgrace Star is Monkey 申. Monkey sits in the hour pillar, so this chart has the star in the hour.
Day base check. The day branch is Rabbit 卯, which belongs to the Wood frame (Pig, Rabbit, Goat). The Wood frame's Disgrace Star is Tiger 寅. There is no Tiger in this chart, so the day base gives nothing.
Reading it. The star appears once, from the year base, in the hour pillar. The Monkey 申 holds 庚 Metal and 壬 Water. For a 癸 Water day master, Metal is the resource element and Water is the peer element, and this chart is already heavy with Water. So the hour pillar describes a later-life or project-based visibility that comes through knowledge and credentials (the Metal), with a risk of oversharing among peers (the extra Water). I would read it as a chart that should publish work only when it is finished, and that does well when it lets the work speak first.
Disgrace Star Years Ahead
The star also arrives through time. When the annual branch matches your Disgrace Star branch, that year tends to put you on display. Here are the next years when each branch returns:
| Year | Annual pillar | Disgrace Star year for frame |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 乙巳 Wood Snake | Fire (Tiger, Horse, Dog) |
| 2028 | 戊申 Earth Monkey | Metal (Snake, Rooster, Ox) |
| 2031 | 辛亥 Metal Pig | Water (Monkey, Rat, Dragon) |
| 2034 | 甲寅 Wood Tiger | Wood (Pig, Rabbit, Goat) |
| 2037 | 丁巳 Fire Snake | Fire (Tiger, Horse, Dog) |
2026 (丙午) and 2027 (丁未) are not Disgrace Star years for any frame, because Horse and Goat are not among the four branches.
Months work the same way at a smaller scale. The Tiger month runs from about 4 February to 5 March, the Snake month from about 5 May to 5 June, the Monkey month from about 7 August to 7 September, and the Pig month from about 7 November to 6 December. Exact dates move by a day depending on the solar terms. A Disgrace Star year still follows the ten-year cycle, though, so read it against your ten-year luck cycle before drawing conclusions.
How to Work With the Star
The practical advice is plain. In Disgrace Star periods, or in the area of life where the star sits, slow the release. Finish before you announce. Keep private matters private by default. Check contracts, posts and emails once more than you normally would.
The other half matters just as much. If your work needs an audience, these are the periods to be seen, as long as what you show is ready. The star does not create scandal out of nothing. It amplifies what is already there.
If you want to see how this star interacts with the rest of your chart, including the stars around it and the ten-year cycle you are in now, the Saju Book walks through the full method.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Disgrace Star always bad?
No. Older texts read it as loss of face, but the branch is really about exposure and ambition one step before its peak. In charts where the branch carries a helpful element, the same star shows up as charisma, visibility and public success.
Is the Disgrace Star the same as the Peach Blossom Star?
No. Peach Blossom always falls on Rat 子, Rabbit 卯, Horse 午 or Rooster 酉, and it describes attraction. The Disgrace Star falls on Tiger 寅, Snake 巳, Monkey 申 or Pig 亥, and it describes visibility. They can appear together, and when they do, romantic matters are more likely to become public.
Should I use my year branch or my day branch?
Use both. The year branch is the traditional base and points to public image and reputation. The day branch points to private life and relationships. A star found from both bases is a stronger theme.
What if my own year branch is the Disgrace Star branch?
That can happen only from the day base, since the year base never points to itself. For example, a Rabbit day branch points to Tiger, so someone with a Tiger year and a Rabbit day has the star in the year pillar. Read it as reputation and family name being unusually visible.
