Heaven Star in Saju: Find It on 4 Branches and Plan Around It

The Heaven Star (천살, cheonsal) marks the place in a birth chart where events arrive from outside your control. It always falls on one of four branches: the Goat (未), the Ox (丑), the Dragon (辰) or the Dog (戌), and which one you get depends on the three-harmony frame of your year or day branch. If you only want the answer, use the lookup table below and check your own pillars. If you do not know your pillars yet, a free saju reading will lay them out for you in a minute.

In my readings I treat the Heaven Star as a question of posture rather than a warning. It does not say something bad will happen. It says that in this pillar, or in this year, effort alone will not decide the outcome. Weather, institutions, older people, rules written by someone else: these carry more weight than usual. People who fight that tend to feel the star as bad luck. People who plan around it often find it is the star of faith, patience and timing.

The Heaven Star is the third of the twelve spirit stars (12신살), the cycle that also gives us the Robbery Star and the Imprisonment Star. For the full family, see the sinsal guide, and if you like going deeper on your own chart, the Saju Book walks through every pillar step by step.

How to Find the Heaven Star: The 4 Branch Lookup

Every branch belongs to one of four three-harmony frames (삼합). The frame decides where the twelve stars land. The Heaven Star sits two places after the frame's Robbery Star and one place before its Earth Star, which is why it always lands on an earth branch.

Your base branchFrameHeaven Star branch

Two things to notice. First, the Heaven Star branch is always the branch that sits just before the frame starts its cycle again. In the water frame, the Monkey 申 opens the frame and the Goat 未 stands right before it. The old texts read this as the moment before birth, when nothing can be done by hand and everything depends on what comes down from above.

Second, the Heaven Star always clashes with the frame's Saddle Star. Goat 未 clashes Ox 丑, Dog 戌 clashes Dragon 辰. So when one is active, the other is shaken. A rise in status (Saddle) and a loss of control (Heaven) are two ends of one axis.

The 4 Step Self Check

Step 1: Pick your two bases

Korean practice reads the twelve stars from two bases: the year branch and the day branch. Write both down. The year branch follows Ipchun, the solar start of spring around 4 February, not the lunar new year. Someone born on 1 February 1984 still has the Pig year branch, not the Rat.

Step 2: Find the Heaven Star for each base

Use the table above. If your year branch is the Rat 子, your Heaven Star from the year base is the Goat 未. If your day branch is the Rabbit 卯, your Heaven Star from the day base is the Dog 戌. It is common to have two different Heaven Star branches.

Step 3: Look for that branch in your four pillars

Check the year, month, day and hour branches. Each position tells you where the theme lives.

PositionWhat the Heaven Star tends to touch
Year pillarFamily background, inherited duty, events from the generation above
Month pillarCareer environment, employers, rules of the workplace, siblings
Day pillarYour own body and marriage; a tendency toward faith or private practice
Hour pillarLater life, children, long projects whose results come late

If the branch is absent, the star is not in your natal chart. It can still arrive in a year, a month or a ten year cycle that carries that branch, which is covered below.

Step 4: Check what the branch is doing

A Heaven Star branch that is clashed or penalised behaves very differently from one that sits quietly.

Heaven Star branchClashes withPenalty groupHidden stems

A clash makes the star loud: sudden moves, changed plans, rules that shift overnight. A penalty from the 丑戌未 group adds friction with authority or paperwork; I explain that group in the hyeong guide. The hidden stems matter too. If the main hidden stem of your Heaven Star branch is your useful god, the outside force tends to help you, even when it does not feel like it at first.

A Worked Example (Hypothetical Chart)

Say someone was born on 22 August 1984 at 14:00. This is an illustration of the method, not a real person.

  • Year: 甲子 (Yang Wood Rat). Ipchun 1984 had already passed.
  • Month: 壬申. The Monkey month runs from the start of autumn, around 7 August, to around 7 September, and a 甲 year gives a 壬申 month.
  • Day: 戊子. Calculated from the Julian day number with the standard 60 day formula.
  • Hour: 己未. A 14:00 birth falls in the Goat hour, and a 戊 day starts its hours from 壬子, so the Goat hour is 己未.

Both bases are the Rat 子, so both point to the Goat 未 as the Heaven Star. The Goat sits in the hour pillar. Read with the table above, the star touches later life and long projects. The Goat also forms a harm pair (子未) with both the year and the day branch, one of the smaller frictions I describe in hae and pa. So the theme here is effort that pays late and depends on outside approval: a licence, a grant, a decision made by a board.

Now add the year 2027 (丁未). A second Goat arrives and lands on the same star. In a chart like this I would look at 2027 as a year to finish paperwork early, keep agreements in writing and avoid staking everything on one decision that belongs to someone else. Whether the year then turns good or tight depends on the rest of the chart, mainly whether the Earth of the Goat helps or burdens this 戊 Earth day master.

Heaven Star Years and Months

The star turns active when a year, a month or a ten year cycle carries your Heaven Star branch.

Heaven Star branchRecent and coming yearsSolar month (approximate)
Ox 丑2021, 2033, 2045about 5 January to about 3 February
Dragon 辰2024, 2036, 2048about 5 April to about 5 May
Goat 未2015, 2027, 2039about 7 July to about 7 August
Dog 戌2018, 2030, 2042about 8 October to about 7 November

The timely one: 2027, the 丁未 year, is a Heaven Star year for anyone whose base is the Monkey, the Rat or the Dragon. For that same water frame, 2026 (丙午) is the Imprisonment Star year, so the two stars run back to back. The year changes at Ipchun, around 4 February 2027.

The month that is closing right now matters for the wood frame. The Dog month of 2026 runs until the start of winter on about 7 November, so Pig, Rabbit and Goat bases are at the very end of a Heaven Star month as this is published. The next Heaven Star month for the fire frame (Tiger, Horse, Dog) starts with Minor Cold, around 5 January 2027.

Annual stars are lighter than ten year ones. If your ten year cycle carries the Heaven Star branch, it colours a whole decade; a single year is a season inside it. The balance between the two is explained in annual luck vs the ten year cycle.

How the Heaven Star Shows Up

The classic keywords for this star are heaven, weather, elders and faith. In modern charts I read them like this:

  • Decisions made above you. Restructuring, new regulations, a visa rule, a landlord selling the building. Things you did not choose but have to answer.
  • Respect for older people and institutions. Relationships with parents, bosses and teachers carry more weight. Being right matters less than being patient.
  • A pull toward belief. Religion, meditation, study of old systems such as saju itself. Many charts with a strong Heaven Star in the day pillar keep a private practice of some kind.
  • Timing over force. Pushing a launch, a move or a confrontation into a Heaven Star month often costs more than waiting six weeks.

What the star does not mean: illness, accidents or disaster as a fixed prediction. Old manuals listed natural disasters under this star because farming families depended on the sky. A modern reading keeps the structure (outside forces lead) and drops the fear.

Working With the Heaven Star

These are the practical habits I suggest when the star is active in a chart.

  1. Put the controllable part on paper. Contracts, deadlines and approvals in writing, finished before the Heaven Star month if you can.
  2. Leave margin. Budget and schedule for one change you did not plan. The star rarely blocks a plan; it bends it.
  3. Ask the senior person early. Elders, managers or officials hold the key in these windows. Asking first usually works better than asking for forgiveness.
  4. Keep a steady practice. Prayer, meditation, a weekly walk, anything that is done for its own sake. Old practitioners recommended devotion as the remedy for this star, and the logic still holds: it trains you to wait well.

If the Heaven Star sits next to a Travel Star in a chart, moves abroad often happen because of someone else's decision, a transfer or a family need, rather than a free choice. If it sits with the General Star, authority tends to come through an institution rather than in spite of it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Heaven Star a bad sign in saju?

No. It is one of the twelve spirit stars and every chart meets it in some year. It marks an area where outside forces lead. Whether that helps or hurts depends on the element of the branch, your useful god and what the branch is combined or clashed with.

Should I use my year branch or my day branch?

Both. Korean practice checks the twelve stars from the year branch and from the day branch. The year base speaks more to family and society, the day base more to your own life and marriage. If both point to the same branch, as in the example above, the theme is stronger.

What is the difference between the Heaven Star and the Saddle Star?

They sit on opposite branches and clash with each other. The Saddle Star marks a rise you can ride, the Heaven Star marks a situation you have to accept. When one is triggered in a year, the other is usually shaken too.

Can the Heaven Star be cancelled?

Not in the sense of being deleted. A combination can soften it (the Goat 未 combines with the Horse 午, the Ox 丑 with the Rat 子), and a strong useful god in its hidden stems can turn it supportive. For a full check of how the twelve stars sit in your pillars, use the special stars self check.

See Where the Heaven Star Sits in Your Chart

A lookup table tells you where the star is. It does not tell you whether that branch is your useful god, which ten year cycle switches it on, or how it combines with the rest of your pillars. That is the part I read by hand. If you want the full picture, including your Heaven Star years through 2030, order a personal saju report and I will go through your chart pillar by pillar.
